Riley, confusing Kylie for her reflection

"Double Trouble" is the twenty-fourth episode of the second season, and the sixty-fourth episode of The Replacements.

Synopsis[]

When Riley discovers that Johnny has a date for their environmental club's award dinner, she tries to find a date for herself; Riley struggles to move on from Johnny, especially after she discovers that Johnny's date looks just like her.

Plot[]

Riley had joined the Nature Tweens environmental club because Johnny is the president of their chapter. She claims that she is over him, yet she has a plan to win him back at the club's upcoming award dinner. Sierra informs Riley that Johnny already has a date for the dinner, which sends Riley into a catatonic state.

Riley's sudden interest in environmentalism inspires Dick Daring to throw out his gas-guzzling equipment. Dick builds a solar-powered jetpack. He tests it out right as the clouds cover the sun, and he crash lands into the yard.

Abbey and Tasumi try to find Riley a date for the award dinner. First, they browse through the yearbook for potential dates. Then Tasumi brings Riley to a tween speed dating service. Riley talks to a nerdy kid who likes rabbits, a boy who likes musical theater, and Jacobo. Just when Riley is about to give up, she meets a boy named Barry who is interested in joining Nature Tweens.

Todd does not want his father to give up hope for solar energy, as Dick had purchased fifty cases of solar cells. Buzz brags about his family's two-week vacation, which was made possible by the money they saved when they switched to solar. Inspired by the Winterses, Dick builds a solar-powered tanning booth. Todd and Dick excitedly plan to take their device to the Nature Tweens award dinner, unaware of the device's major flaw.

The award dinner is held in the school's gym. When Riley and Barry arrive, Riley has Barry explain to Todd and Dick why their device is useless. Meanwhile, Riley sees what she thinks is her reflection. Her reflection turns out to be Johnny's date Kylie, who coincidentally looks almost exactly like Riley. Sierra asks Riley if she can investigate Kylie, and in an act of desperation, Riley gives her permission to do so.

Riley plans to stay away from Johnny during the dinner. Phil Mygrave, who had replaced the maître d', seats Riley with Johnny and Kylie; Riley forgot to cancel the replacement. Sierra gives Riley information she found about Kylie: not only does she look and act like Riley, but she also said that Riley is "last year's model." When Sierra brings up the prank that she pulled on Riley at the Fall Dance, Riley decides to do the same to Kylie.

S2E22 Riley and Johnny courtyard confrontation

Riley and Johnny arguing in the courtyard after what Riley did to Johnny's cousin.

Riley lures Kylie to the fountain in the courtyard, where there is a bag of candy sitting on the edge. When Kylie leans over to take it, Riley shoves Kylie into the fountain. As Riley berates Kylie for being a copycat, Johnny enters the courtyard and scolds Riley, saying that she is no better than Sierra. Kylie is Johnny's cousin. This proves to be another one of Sierra's schemes, as she knew that Kylie was related to Johnny. Barry reveals that he used Riley to see his ex-girlfriend again, then he and Kylie reunite. Finally, Riley tries to find humor in this situation, but Johnny is not interested in getting back together with her.
