"Heartbreak in the City" is the twentieth episode of the second season, and the sixtieth episode of The Replacements.

Synopsis[]

Johnny gets a modeling gig in New York City. Paranoid that Johnny would dump her for a supermodel, Riley travels to New York to crash the fashion show. Meanwhile, with Agent K and Riley out of the house, Dick and Todd enjoy a "dude day". Tim Gunn guest stars.

Plot[]

Act I[]

Riley celebrates her three-month anniversary with Johnny; she is about to spend the day with him on a school trip to Historic Jamesburg. Her constant talk about Johnny irritates Todd and Dick. Johnny comes over to give Riley a surprise: a Teen Swoon Magazine with himself on the cover. He had won a contest to become the new face of 2-2 Clothes. Riley tackles him and kisses him, saying "dating you just keeps getting better and better."

On the day of the trip, Johnny is absent from school. Riley gets a text from Johnny that says, "Sorry-can't make it. We should talk". According to Sierra McCool, this means that Riley's relationship is over. Johnny's mother calls Riley with important news; her son left his phone at home, and he is heading to New York City.

At Jamesburg, Riley struggles to decipher Johnny's text. Sierra, seeing a chance to manipulate Riley, shows her a magazine ad in which a female model embraces Johnny. Riley begins to believe that Johnny may have dumped her in favor of a supermodel, so she makes an on-the-spot decision to confront him. She calls Conrad to replace the bus driver with someone who can take her to New York City.

Meanwhile at home, Todd sees a note from Agent K that says she is on a spy mission. Dick and Todd quickly realize that they are free to do whatever they want now that Agent K and Riley are away. They declare the day to be Dude Day. They are joined by Petrov, one of Agent K's enemies.

While Riley rationalizes her decision to confront Johnny, the Fleemco crew sends the bus driver on a vacation to Hawaii. The school bus gets replaced with a taxi, and Riley and her friends travel to New York.

Act II[]

S2E18 Daring guys Shelton Jacobo and Petrov relaxing

Dude day at the Daring house.

Todd, Dick, and Petrov relax, eat pizza, and watch Monkey Cop movies. Suddenly, they hear the doorbell ring, and they hide thinking that Agent K has returned. In fact, Shelton and Jacobo are at the door, and they join the Darings.

When Riley and her friends arrive at the fashion show, Abbey spots fashion designer Hazel Atrocious. Riley tries to talk to Hazel, which results in Hazel roasting Riley's clothes. Riley and her friends are denied entry to the fashion show. She realizes she has to act like a model in order to fit in. Abbey teaches Riley how to be a fashionista as they go to the spa and Zak's Sixth Avenue.

Meanwhile, the Daring house is a mess. Todd sees an empty surveillance camera while browsing the cupboard, and he begins to realize that Agent K may have been spying on him while she was away. Jacobo, Shelton, and Petrov go home. Todd and Dick search the house for hidden cameras.

Act III[]

S2E18 makeovers

Abbey, Riley, and Tasumi's new looks.

After getting makeovers, Riley, Abbey, and Tasumi attend the fashion show. Riley goes backstage to find Johnny while her friends keep an eye on Hazel Atrocious. At home, Todd and his father get to work cleaning the house. Backstage at the fashion show, Riley sees the model from the ad embracing Johnny. An employee stops Riley from following Johnny onstage. The employee, thinking Riley is one of the models, tells her that she is wearing the spring collection. Riley looks at a clothes rack and decides to improvise.

Tim Gunn hosts the fashion show, and he gets confused by Riley's outfit. Riley confronts Johnny, demanding to know if she is being dumped. Johnny, annoyed at Riley for disrupting the show, tells her they can talk later, which makes Riley angrier. Doing some quick thinking, Abbey and Tasumi tell a trio of models that "avant-garde confrontation fashion" is the "new rage", so they go onstage and praise Riley's attitude. Soon Riley's friends, Hazel, and the three models engage in a catfight. Johnny calls for peace, only for Hazel to fire him for having unattractive friends. After Johnny and the others leave, the taxi driver takes offense to Hazel's remark about Riley and the others, and flicks Hazel's wig off.

S2E18 Johnny explaining himself to Riley

Johnny calling Riley out for being paranoid.

Riley finds Johnny alone on a park bench. She attempts to apologize for what had happened at the fashion show, but an upset Johnny tells her that she should have known better. Johnny comes to realize that Riley has a controlling attitude, so he decides to break up with her. The taxi driver reminds Riley that she has friends to stick by her, then he reveals himself to be Agent K in disguise. C.A.R. was disguised as a taxi. Agent K tells her daughter that she and Johnny might get back together someday, and that if she loves something, she should set it free.

When Agent K and Riley get home, the house is clean, and Todd and Dick are reading periodicals. Agent K tells the guys that Riley could use some family time, but Riley declines. Todd and Dick celebrate their successful Dude Day, while Agent K checks on her robotic raccoon that she used to spy on the guys.

Trivia[]
